The Right Mowing Height for St. Augustine Grass (Most Crews Cut It Wrong)

Cutting St. Augustine too short is the #1 way Florida lawns get scalped, browned, and taken over by weeds. Here's the height that keeps it thick.

Drive through any Central Florida neighborhood after the mow-and-go crews come through and you'll see it: lawns shaved down to the dirt, brown tips by Thursday, weeds moving in by the weekend.

Here's the number that fixes most of it: St. Augustine grass wants to be cut at 3.5 to 4 inches. Not 2. Not "whatever the mower was set to at the last house."

Why cutting short backfires

St. Augustine spreads by above-ground runners, and its roots grow roughly as deep as the blades grow tall. Scalp it and you get:

  • Shallow roots — the lawn can't reach water, so it browns fast between rains.
  • Open canopy — sunlight hits the soil, and weed seeds throw a party.
  • Stress — a stressed lawn is the first one chinch bugs and fungus pick on.

The one-third rule

Never remove more than a third of the blade in a single cut. If the lawn got away from you at 6 inches, don't drop it to 3.5 in one pass — take it down over two visits. It's slower. It's also how the lawn stays green instead of shock-browning.

Sharp blades matter more than you think

A dull blade doesn't cut grass — it tears it. Torn tips turn tan within a day and give the whole lawn a grey, sick cast even when it's healthy underneath. This is why our crews log blade sharpness and swap on schedule (point 8 of the 9-Point Golden Cut). Ask your current crew when they last sharpened. Watch the pause.

Height by season

In the growing season (roughly March through October here), stay at the higher end — 4 inches — and expect weekly growth. In the cooler months, growth slows way down; the height stays the same, the frequency drops.
